"Ok! I have a plan!" I announced, sounding pretty excited for someone so weary and tired.
"And your plan is..." Clara prompted.
"Let's go to the Restricted Section of the library! We can open a book, it will scream, and some teacher'll come running."
"Lauren, not all the books in the Restricted Section scream when they're opened."
"Oh."
We sat around for another eternity, waiting to get caught. But nobody came. By now, I figured, me and Clara's faces would be printed on milk cartons all over the nation. How wonderful. I always wanted to be a milk carton, ya know. It was my childhood dream.
"Lauren! Someone's coming!" she exclaimed in a whisper.
I snapped out of my milk carton daydreams. "Huh?"
"SHHH!" she nearly spit in my face.
If I listened really extra hard, I thought I could just barely make out the sound of somebody's shoes hitting the floor and echoing throughout the silent corridor.
And even though I knew I wanted to be found and that I had a justified reason for being out of bed and in the hallways, I still squeezed my eyes closed in anticipation of being caught.
